Thanks for the useful discussion of equipment. As a new hiker, I appreciate the thoroughness of the list and recommendations about clothing.
I've assembled the 10 items and have stowed them in my pack. With gas prices going up, I now look forward to my 6 mile walk to the store as "conditioning" for real hikes!
